Famed local boxer’s brother a murder suspect

Jalisco authorities are searching for the brother of local boxing hero Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, following the murder of a 19-year-old man on the outskirts of Guadalajara.

Luis Enrique Gama Partida was shot and beaten to death outside a private party on Calle Cinco de Mayo in Alvarez’s home town of Juanacatlan in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The deceased’s family say he was killed by the boxer’s brother, Victor Manuel Alvarez Barragan, when an alcohol-fueled argument turned ugly. Together with the Juanacatlan mayor, they made a formal accusation at the State Attorney General’s Office (PGJEJ) this week.

Victor Alvarez has since disappeared, with authorities having confirmed that he is a murder suspect. He was previously arrested for speeding near the Guadalajara Airport on February 9. Police found ammunition for several firearms and a radio set to the municipal police frequency inside his vehicle.

“Canelo” Alvarez is the current WBC Light Middleweight champion. His last fight, a victory over Josesito Lopez in the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, earned him a cool two million dollars.
