Vulnerable citizens get clothing handout before cold sets in

The Jalisco Family Development Agency (DIF)  has purchased more than 50,000 short-sleeved sweatshirts, 8,500 long-sleeved shirts and 20,000 scarves to be distributed to 27,000 economically-challenged and vulnerable families in this state who might be affected by the colder temperatures over the coming winter.

DIF has spent 3.3 million pesos on the warm clothing, some of which was handed out at a symbolic ceremony held in Guadalajara this week marking the start of the 12-year-old program known as the Programa Asistencial Plan de Invierno.

One of the recipients was pensioner Celia Ramos Lopez from Ixtlahuacan de los Membrillos, who noted that “the cold in my pueblo is very harsh.”

The DIF has assisted around 400,000 families since the program began in 2000.  In addition, DIF has spent 1.15 million pesos on items, including food parcels, blankets and mattresses, that can be used in case of a severe winter emergency in the state.

Eighty temporary winter shelters for homeless people will soon open across Jalisco.
