Tuberculosis up

The Jalisco Health Department (SSJ) recorded 1,193 cases of tuberculosis up until December 22 last year, a 17 percent rise on 2011.

Worldwide, some eight million people fell ill from tuberculosis and 1.5 million died from the disease in 2012, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported. Tuberculosis typically attacks the lungs and is most common among children and the elderly. According to the WHO, about one third of the world’s population have latent tuberculosis, meaning they have been infected by tuberculosis bacteria but are not ill with disease and cannot transmit it.
