Huicholes leave town after getting assurances over disputed land

More than 400 Huicholes quickly packed up their belongings and headed back to their homes in the north of Jalisco after receiving assurances from Interior Ministry (Segob) officials that grievances related to land rights will be addressed promptly.

Last week, members of the Jalisco indigenous community had vowed to camp out in the city for as long as it took to fix the matter. They wanted authorities to give their word that land they say is legally theirs will be returned from “invading mestizo famers.”

Segob has fixed a date of September 8 by which time the Secretaría de Desarrollo Agrario, Territorial y Urbano (Sedatu) must act to oversee the return of 2,483 hectares of some 10,000 acres of disputed land.
