One in 10 traffic cops shown the door so far this year

Nine percent of Jalisco’s traffic cops have been dismissed from their jobs this year, as state authorities continue to crack down on corruption in the Transportation Department (Secretaria de Movilidad or Semov).

The 180 officers given their marching orders were not all guilty of corruption, Traffic Police Commissioner Francisco Poe Morales pointed out this week.   Some were sacked for “abuse of authority” and “improper conduct,” he said.

In addition, another 166 officers are in the “process of investigation,” he said.

In a further bid to reduce corruption within Semov, officers’ patrol cars will soon be fitted with cameras to capture their interactions with the public. They will have microphones attached to their uniforms, allowing every word of their conversations to be recorded.  Around 500 cameras will be installed in the first stage of the program, Poe said.
