Losing candidate commits murder-suicide

Lakeside area authorities have labeled the side-by-side deaths of a losing candidate for mayor of Tizapan el Alto (on Lake Chapala’s south shore) and his spouse as a homicide-suicide case.

The bodies of Eduardo Morfin Contreras and Maria del Socorro Perez Pulido, both aged 43, were found at around 3 a.m. Sunday, June 14 near the edge of Highway 15 in the vicinity of Rancho San Vicente.

Initial news reports described the incident as a suspected double murder, but evidence collected at the scene led investigators to the conclusion that Morfin shot and killed his partner before taking his own life.

Morfin ran for election under the banner of the National Alliance Party (Panal), placing fifth in the race with only 328 votes. At this point in the investigation it is not known if he was despondent over his political defeat or some other personal matter.
