‘Lifestyle’ mall planned for south of city

A new road linking the Camino Real a Colima (Prolongation Colon) to the Santa Anita neighborhood on Lopez Mateos Sur has opened.

The 1.2-kilometer road, known as Avenida Punto Sur, as been designed for the convenience of the pedestrian and cyclist as much as motorists.  The four-lane avenue boasts dedicated cycle lanes and pedestrian paths along its entirety.

The road joins with Lopez Mateos at Punto Sur in Santa Anita, an ambitious real estate/commercial development that is scheduled to open in December next year.

The “lifestyle” mall will house 60-70 businesses, as well as a movie theater complex. A 15-story, 160-room Aloft Hotel is also planned at a cost of around 12 million dollars.

Tlajomulco Mayor Ismael del Toro says he believes the mall will become “a meeting point” for residents in the southern part of the city.

According to Pablo Errejón, director of the project’s developers Tierr y Armonia, the distinctive feature of Punto Sur will be its “main avenue” – with wide sidewalks for pedestrians and outdoor cafe seating – that is similar to Avenida Chapultepec in Guadalajara “Pink Zone.”

With dozens of new residential developments springing up in the past decade, Tlajomulco is metro-area Guadalajara’s fastest-growing municipality. But critics of the building boom say infrastructure cannot keep pace with the construction and services are constantly being stretched to their limit.
