Bullfighting ban legislation in the works

The Green Party will introduce legislation to prohibit bullfighting throughout Jalisco.

Enrique Aubry, the sole state congressman for the Partido Verde Ecologista de México (PVEM), made the announcement during a small protest held outside Guadalajara’s Plaza Nuevo Progreso bullring on Sunday.

Although bullfighting maintains a loyal following in Jalisco, especially among the political elite, Aubrey believes around 80 percent of the population would support its prohibition.

The politician admitted that powerful vested interests will resist a bullfighting ban but said it was time to “raise our voices” and take to the streets to protect animal rights.

The backing of the Green Party adds some weight to the clamor from citizens’ groups that have protested the spectacle for many years.

Aubrey said he has not ruled out a future initiative to force zoos in the state to become “open” facilities, in keeping with Safari park models.
