Super Bowl fans to feast on Michoacan avocados

It’s no wonder Jalisco is so keen to grab a slice of the U.S. avocado market that neighbors Michoacan currently monopolizes.  Americans are loco for the fruit – especially when Super Bowl time comes around.

According to federal Agriculture Secretary Jose Calzada, Mexico (meaning Michoacan) will export avocados to the tune of $US200 million for consumption on Sunday, February 5, when the Atlanta Falcons take on the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LI (51). Last year’s total of 95,000 tons, or 278 million individual avocados, set a record that will probably be surpassed this year.

The United States imports around 800,000 tons of avocados from Michoacan each year – 82 percent of their total imports.

Preparing guacamole as a Super Bowl treat has become something of an American tradition in recent years, Calzada noted.
