Day-long congress at ancient Guachimontones site

The Interpretative Museum at the Guachimontones archaeological site will mark its fifth anniversary with a congress/seminar on Friday, February 24. Among speakers will be Reporter columnist John Pint (from 10 a.m.), as well as archaeologists Joseph Mountjoy and Rodrigo Esparza.

Guachimontones is located in Teuchitlan, 40 miles west of Guadalajara. Excavated by late U.S. archaeologist Phil Weigand, they are Jalisco’s prime ancient ruins and visited by some 130,000 people each year.

A full-size mock-up of an abode used by inhabitants of the site was recently inaugurated at the site that archaeologists say was populated between 300BC to 900AD. The complex reached its zenith from 200-400AD. The dominant features of the site are its circular stepped pyramids.
