State to demand tougher motorcycle training & skills

Anyone purchasing a new motorbike must have a license or have taken a 120-hour course in the appropriate driving skills.

That’s the basis of a new regulation the Jalisco Transportation Department (Semov) is hoping to implement later this month.

Traffic Director Francisco Poe Morales reports that the number of high-powered motorbikes has doubled to half a million in the space of a few years, partly because they are so easy to buy.  This growth has led to a sharp rise in motorcycle accidents and fatalities: 51 people died last year, according to Semov data. In addition, 17,780 tickets were issued to bikers for not using helmets or wearing the correct reflective waistcoats.
