Cirque du Soleil’s ambitious Vallarta theme park moves ahead

The planned “Cirque du Soleil Theme Park,” set to open in Nuevo Vallarta in 2019, will become one of Mexico’s most outstanding attractions, Daniel Lamarre, director of the famous Canadian circus arts troupe, predicted recently.

The park will be the first of its kind created by the Montreal-based outfit.

“It won’t be a theme park based on mechanical games, but on art and animation,” Lamarre said in a recent interview.

The park will feature “interactive acts” culled from shows put on by the troupe during its 33-year history.

A feature of the park will be a spectacle based on “O”,  the water-themed stage production that has been in permanent residence at the Bellagio in Las Vegas since October 1998. A special arena will be able to seat 5,000 person per session.

While the show will have an international character, Lamarre also categorized the new attraction as “a love letter to Mexico.”

The theme park is being developed in conjunction with Grupo Vidanta, which operates the Mayan Palace chain of hotels.

Vidanta Riviera Maya helped develop and operates the permanent show, “Joya,” at the Teatro del Cirque du Soleil  just north of Playa del Carmen in the Riviera Maya.

Developers expect the Cirque du Soleil theme park to be able to receive around two million visitors a year.
