Gun turn-in program starts in full public view

The first person to bring a weapon to the gun turn-in campaign that started in Guadalajara’s Plaza de la Liberacion on April 24 went home happy with some new kitchen equipment.

“David” had inherited a rifle from his grandfather, keeping it in a cupboard inside his house. But with his daughter growing up fast, he decided it was not safe to keep it any longer.

After turning in the weapon, David watched as it was sawed  into three pieces before his eyes.  The destroyed weapons will be donated to artists to form a “peace” mural.

In return for his weapon,  valued at 7,500 pesos, David received a new refrigerator and a microwave oven.

Open-air modules where weapons can be handed in will be set up in the central plazas of Guadalajara (Plaza Liberación), Zapopan (Plaza de las Americas), Tonala, Tlaquepaque and Tlajomulco.

Citizens who surrender weapons will not face any questioning, even though most will probably be unlicensed.

Hours will be from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and the campaign will run until June 24.

Jalisco Governor Aristoteles Sandoval presided over the inauguration of the gun turn-in campaign.
