Driving and dialing can cause jail time

If you’re involved in a car accident while using your cell phone, you could end up serving jail time. Sentences could be between 3-10 years if the accident resulted in death or serious injury.

The law that might put automotive multi-taskers behind bars in Jalisco is part of a move to reform both laws governing transportation and the state’s penal code.

Behind the bill is state lawmaker Rocio Corona, who in a strong statement castigated those who blithely risk their own lives and the lives of others when they opt to operate their phones while driving.

“It’s a total disgrace that innocent people lose their lives and suffer injuries as a result of an irresponsible driver…in Jalisco seven out of every ten accidents happen because of somebody texting or making a call while behind the wheel,” said Corona.

The initiative is also pushing for a massive increase in fines penalizing cellphone use, with a proposed hike from 75-377 pesos to 2,264-2,642 pesos.
