Avocado imports considered as high cost, shortages persist

The Mexican government is analyzing the possibility of importing avocados during the “high” season when exports from this country to the United States and other nations are at their highest.

Despite assurances from federal agricultural officials that the price of avocados would come down during the summer, their high cost has been maintained in recent months. Price gouging by some unscrupulous vendors – sometimes reaching 85-100 pesos a kilo – is not uncommon, although the average price at metro-area Guadalajara outlets is between 60 and 70 pesos.

Mexican Finance Minister Ildefonso Guajardo said Peru or Chile would be the most likely countries from which to import avocados.

Mexico is one of the world’s principal producers of avocados.  Guajardo said recent efforts to increase domestic production should bear fruit in the near future.
