Jalisco won’t issue 7-Up health warning after death in Baja California

In spite of nine people being sickened and one killed earlier this week after consuming 7-Up soda tainted with methamphetamine in Mexicali, Baja California, Jalisco health authorities have yet to issue an alert warning people to avoid drinking the lemon-lime-flavored beverage.

The reason for the state government’s silence on the matter may be chalked up to bureaucratic obtuseness, judging from the explanation given by Jalisco Health Secretary Antonio Cruces Mada.  “Here in Jalisco there is no precedent for the potentially toxic effects that could be associated with this type of drink,” he said.

However, Mada assured the press that a meeting between various soda companies and the Federal Commission of Protection against Health Risks would shortly take place, resulting, presumably, in a unified, nationwide guideline on the issue.
