Cyber crime goes unpunished

Cyber crime, that most modern of extra-legal maladies, goes by-and-large un-punished in the state of Jalisco, according to the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE).

Between July 2012 and July 2017, the FGE has undertaken 1,296 investigations of internet fraud.  Not one person has been arrested as a result of these inquests. According to Victor Larios, director of the University of Guadalajara’s Centro de Innovacion de Cuidades Inteligentes, a major reason for the impunity enjoyed by perpetrators of cyber crime is that, often, they operate from abroad, far outside the jurisdiction of state authorities.
