Cold snap chills Jalisco, much of Mexico, low temps to continue

A cold front glided in and wrapped its frigid blue hands around Jalisco last Saturday, with lows approaching zero degrees Celsius.

It briefly relinquished its grip Monday before tightening back up the next day.

Much of Mexico, in fact, has suffered from the same violent, icy plunge in temperatures. Many northern states, some of which haven’t seen snow in decades, have been blanketed in white, including Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, Durango and Chihuahua.

In addition, the prognosis for the next few days doesn’t conjure any scenarios likely to please a populous for the most part unused to such a chilly climate.  The mercury is likely to fall as low as five below zero throughout over 17 states.  Scattered showers are also forecast for many regions, including Jalisco and Nayarit.

The coldest municipality in Jalisco has been Colotlan in the north of the state, where temperatures have plunged to below minus one degree Celsius.

In spite of the suddenness and severity of the cold snap, no deaths have been reported relating to the meteorological anomaly in Jalisco, according to the state’s Civil Protection Unit.

The Guadalajara Red Cross has announced it will be accepting donations of warm clothes – for the state’s homeless population – Saturday, December 16, from 3-8 p.m. at its headquarters on San Felipe 7, next to the Parque Morelos.
