Zapopan city hall offers home insurance with property taxes

Home owners in Zapopan now have the choice of purchasing low-cost insurance when they pay their 2018 property taxes (predial).

There are three types of insurance on offer:

1) Against theft. Cost: 58 pesos. Cover: Up to 15,000 pesos for losses and damages occurred during a home robbery.

2) Against theft and limited cover from natural disaster damage. Cost: 185 pesos. Cover: Up to 15,000 pesos for robbery, and 50,000 pesos for natural disaster damages.

3) Against theft and complete cover from natural disaster damage. Cost: 290 pesos. Cover:  Up to 15,000 pesos for robbery, and 100,000 pesos for natural disaster damages.

Zapopan Treasurer Luis Garcia Sotelo said the municipality is trying to “promote a culture of prevention.”

Garcia Sotelo stressed that the insurance is voluntary.

The arrangement, made with insurance company Afirme, is at least 50-percent cheaper than it would cost home owners in the private sector, he stressed.

Zapopan has maintained its 2018 property taxes at the same rates as last year. As in most municipalities in Mexico, discounts are obtainable in the first two months of the year.
