Country & Nevado de Colima ravaged by cold front

Weather patterns across Mexico are chilling its citizens – often ill-adapted to such frigid airs – to the bone, as well as throwing a wet blanket (made of snow, rain and fog) over plans vacationers might have had with regards to a popular recreational destination: the neighboring Parque Nacional Nevado de Colima.

According to the National Meteorological Service (SMN), more inclement weather is in store for the country: strong storms are forecast for Jalisco, as well as heavy light rain for much of the rest of the country.  Temperatures are expected to plummet to five degrees below zero in the north, an area which can also expect winds gusting at 50 km/h.

Hector Magaña of Universidad de Guadalajara (UdeG)’s Institute of Astronomy and Meteorology expects a continuation of the cloudiness and chilly temperatures at night that have characterized the last few days in the Guadalajara metro area, with reprieves of sunshine in the morning, late afternoon and early evening.  UdeG’s resident weather guru also foresees lows of about seven degrees Celsius and highs of 22.

Hard hit has been the Parque Nevada de Colima, one of the few places in central Mexico where snow isn’t a climatic aberration.  Such are the conditions there that on Wednesday park officials barred entry to the popular peak, citing as reasons poor visibility and icy roads.
