Mexican Navy attacks state cops

A helicopter from the Mexican Navy (Marina) opened fire on five patrol vehicles from Jalisco’s Fuerza Unica rapid response police squad Sunday in an incident that Governor Aristoteles Sandoval later described as “a confusion.”

The officers had been dispatched to an area on the Jalisco-Michoacan border near Jilotlan de Dolores to assist in the investigation of the April 14 murder of mayor Carlos Andrade (see facing story).

No one was injured in the attack, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Sandoval said communication between state and federal authorities needs to improve, and on Monday he personally filed a complaint with the Interior Ministry (Gobernacion) over the incident.
