Over 300,000 dwellings lie vacant and abandoned in Jalisco, according to the Jalisco College of Urban Architects, which emphasized that most of the units were bought on credit.
The college’s study found that Tlajomulco de Zuñiga shoulders a significant statistical portion of houses left to their own devices by former owners; the municipality hosts between 50,000 and 60,000 abandoned units, specifically in the zone known as Valles. It is a prime example of a neighborhood where housing developments exist in areas with poor utilities, services and transportation, as well as serious levels of air pollution.
Other parts of the metro area with a high number of vacant dwellings are parts of Tlaquepaque, El Salto and Tonala.
