Governor-elect breaks with party that launched him to power

Jalisco Governor-elect Enrique Alfaro has cut all ties with his party, the Citizens Movement (MC), saying he want to govern for “everyone in the state.”

“MC will always have our support and affection … but the time has come to send a clear message that we’re going to do politics differently,” Alfaro said at his final press conference under the banner of his party.

“With hard work we will win the confidence of those who didn’t vote for us,” Alfaro said.

Alfaro promised he would not run for another political post during the duration of his six-year term of office, stating that his only goal is to be “the best governor in the history of Jalisco.”

Despite his prior differences with Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, Alfaro said he has been in contact with the president-elect’s team and that an amicable dialogue between the two will be arranged.

Regarding his policies to reduce crime and violence in the state (the biggest concern of jaliscienses, according to most surveys), Alfaro said these will be fully revealed after meetings with Alfonso Durazo, slated to be the country’s next federal public security chief.

Alfaro, a former mayor of both Tlajomulco and Guadalajara, said he fully means to put into practice his campaign slogan – “La refundación de Jalisco” (The refoundation of Jalisco).

“Breaking with the old political system will give us a major advantage and strength.”
