Jalisco governor slams Trump UN declaration

Jalisco Governor Aristoteles Sandoval has voiced his opposition to Mexico signing on to the “Global Call to Action on the World Drug Problem.”

Chairing a meeting on the issue at the United Nations on September 24, U.S. President Donald Trump said the aim of the declaration is to reduce drug demand, cut off the supply of illicit drugs, expand treatment and strengthen international cooperation.  “If we take these steps together, we can save the lives of countless people in all corners of the world,” he stated.

On social media, Sandoval called the declaration ”punitive” and advanced by the United States for its own interests.  He accused the United States of creating the market for drugs, while providing the weapons to Mexico that have caused 234,000 deaths over 12 years. He suggested Mexico should promote prevention above prohibition.
