Divorce law to be overhauled

Getting a divorce in the state of Jalisco will soon be easier than ever.

The Constitutional Revision Commission of the State Congress this week approved modifications to the Civil Code permitting the dissolution of a marriage without the need to show wrongdoing by either party.

Jalisco will become the 22nd state in Mexico to enact no-fault divorce laws.  All 52 U.S. states allow no-fault divorce.

The new legislation will see 19 “grounds for divorce” removed from Jalisco’s Civil Code.  These include infidelity, domestic violence, drunkenness, drug addiction and prolonged separations, among others.

“Marriage will continue to be a voluntary agreement between a couple and if one of the parties is not in accord, it can be dissolved,” said Rocío Corona Nakamura, president of the commission.

The bill will now move to the floor of the Congress to be voted on.
