Donations needed for Willa victims

The Jalisco Red Cross has started a campaign to collect donations and supplies for people left in distress following the passage of Hurricane Willa in the state of Nayarit.

More than 30,000 people living mostly in rural communities in the north of the state have been affected by severe flooding provoked by the category-four storm that rocked the state and adjoining Sinaloa October 23.  Most affected are the municipalities of Tuxpan, Tecuala and Acaponeta, where rivers overflowed their banks, inundating dozens of streets and homes.

The main center for donations in downtown Guadalajara is the Cruz Roja headquarters located  at San Felipe 7, next to the Parque Morelos. Only donations of food are being received currently. Donors are asked not to give plastic water bottles, since other arrangement for potable water are being made and, according to Red Cross coordinator Óscar Mejía, the bottles can create a contamination hazard.

Requested items: Beans, sugar, rice and salt; tinned tuna, sardines and vegetables; cooking oil; cookies; cereal; dried mashed potato; dried milk; corn flour; oats; instant soup; and drinking chocolate, coffee and tea.
