Geriatric hospital opens at last

Albeit a year behind schedule, Jalisco Governor Aristoteles Sandoval cut the ribbon this week at the new Guadalajara Geriatric Hospital, which aims to serve more than 180,000 senior citizens in the state.

The first stone of the hospital was laid in May 2016, when Sandoval promised the finished facility would be ready by the end of 2017.

The final cost of the public hospital went about 25 percent over budget, to 424 million pesos ($US22.2 million), of which around one-quarter was earmarked for equipment.

The new facility is located inside the Hospital General de Occidente complex and features 90 beds, emergency and trauma areas and offices for personal psychological attention.

Around 300 staff will be employed in the geriatric facility, which should be up and running within a couple of weeks, administrators say.

The aim is to have around 20 geriatricians working at the hospital; currently there are only eight.
