British drinks giant expands Jalisco operation

British multinational alcoholic beverages company Diageo last week opened a $US400 million extension at its Don Julio distillery in Atotonilco el Alto, Jalisco.

pg6aThe expanded distilling facilities will allow the company to produce other brands in its portfolio, as well as tequila.  The extension also upgrades the bottling operation, offering the capacity to churn out five million boxes of product annually. Additionally, the opening of a new logistics center will consolidate Mexico’s strategic positioning in the company’s international operations.

Diageo has also promised to invest an additional $US250 million in the plant over the next three years.  The new installations and future  investments will guarantee the creation of 1,000 new jobs in the region, Atotonilco Mayor Cruz Carrillo said.

Diageo is the one of the world’s largest producers of spirits and beers. Its brands include Johnnie Walker, Crown Royal, JεB, Buchanan’s, Smirnoff, Captain Morgan, Baileys, Tanqueray and Guinness.

Diageo purchased Don Julio, one of Jalisco’s most renowned brands of aged tequila, five years ago.
