Gunfire prompts panic in Jocotepec

Crowds gathered for the September 15 Grito festivities in Jocotepec scattered in all directions after gunfire broke out barely two blocks away from the central plaza.

The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. on Calle Miguel Arana between Guadalupe Victoria and Matamoros. No injuries were reported, but a photo showing the shattered rear window of an automobile quickly showed up on social media.

Jocotepec Mayor José Miguel Gómez went live on Facebook shortly before 1 a.m. to calm nerves. He advised the public that municipal police officers and National Guard troops were on the scene and on top of the situation, keeping everyone out of danger while the celebration continued.
