Jalisco backs off backpack search measure after deadly school shooting

Education authorities in Jalisco say they will not implement searches of backpacks (mochilas) of primary school students as they enter classes.

The federal Education Ministry announced new guidelines for searches following an incident in Torreon, Coahuila January 10, when an 11-year-old boy opened fire in a private institution, killing his 60-year-old teacher and injuring five others. The student, named  Miguel Angel Ramos, then turned the gun on himself, with fatal consequences.

Mexican Education Secretary Esteban Moctezuma Barragán quickly announced that parents, rather than teachers or security staff, should take on the responsibility of checking backpacks as students enter school premises, as part of a “Mochila Segura” (Secure Backpack) program.
