One of Western Mexico’s most popular lakes for bass fishing is coming under the microscope after local residents say it may be a source of contamination, provoking a surge in health problems for locals.
Representatives of 11 Wixárika and Náyeri indigenous communities are demanding studies of the water quality of the Aguamilpa Dam – located on the Santiago River in the state of Nayarit – to determine whether the deterioration in the health of some of the inhabitants is related to contamination of the basin.
