260,000 apply for state cash assistance

More than a quarter of a million individuals who make a living from day to day, including street workers and the self-employed, have applied for handouts from the Jalisco government, Governor Enrique Alfaro said Tuesday.

In addition, he said nearly 50,000 micro and small business owners in the state have applied for loans to help them pay employees and keep their businesses afloat during the coronavirus crisis.

Through its Plan Emergente para la Protección del Empleo, the Jalisco government has set aside one billion pesos (US42 million) to help Jaliscienses facing financial hardship in these difficult times.  Alfaro said the number of applicants has far exceeded original estimates, and that his administration is investigating the possibility of boosting the relief fund pot.

Registration can be done online at https://planprotege.jalisco.gob.mx.

Applicants for financial support are asked to upload pertinent documents to the website. They will subsequently receive an email notification of an interview date and time, to take place at one of several open-air registration centers currently being installed in the Guadalajara metropolitan area.
