Governor raises hopes of ‘gradual return to normality’ from mid-May

By May 15, the Jalisco state government will have worked out its strategy to exit the coronavirus health contingency lockdown, Governor Enrique Alfaro said Monday after conferring with members of his cabinet.

The decision on exactly when to start reopening the economy and resuming normal activities will be taken after an assessment of “how infections and the lethality of the virus are evolving in the state,” he said.

“Our [mitigation] plan is working,” the governor said. “But the most critical days are still ahead.” (As of April 30, the federal health ministry reported 348 confirmed cases in Jalisco, out of 19,224 nationwide. There have been 28 deaths in the state, and 1,859 nationally.)

Alfaro said an economic re-activation plan for Jalisco is being elaborated. “We already have a first working draft that will be ready for discussion next week.”

Citizens can expect “a gradual return to normality,” but should not have any “false expectations,” the governor said.
