School year in Jalisco is cancelled, will finish remotely

The next time Jalisco schoolchildren sit together in a classroom five long months will have passed.

Governor Enrique Alfaro announced this week that all Jalisco educational facilities will remain closed for the remainder of the annual cycle even though the federal government has authorized a gradual reopening of schools as of May 18.

Alfaro said the rest of the 2019-2020 year will be completed by remote learning, and that students will begin the new cycle on August 24 – depending on the evolution of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Alfaro, who has been one of the nation’s most bullish governors regarding “stay at home” orders, said canceling the rest of the school year will reduce the number of people on the streets by 36 percent.
