Last week’s attempt on the life of Mexico City police chief Omar Garcia Harfuch could be a harbinger of further violent confrontations between the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and federal authorities, say close observers of the country’s crime scene.
Despite being shot three times, Garcia Harfuch survived the attack, which occurred in a prestigious Mexico City neighborhood. Two of the police chief’s bodyguards died in the assault, as well as an innocent 26-year-old female pedestrian, who was struck by a stray bullet.
Analysts surmised that the high-profile hit was probably a response from the CJNG to Garcia Harfuch’s efforts to disrupt their trafficking operations in Mexico City, as well as a recent bilateral investigation into the cartel’s financial dealings, which have resulted in the freezing of 2,000 bank accounts in the past few months.
The latest incident comes on the heels of the murder of a federal judge who was instrumental in getting the son of CJNG capo Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes (“El Mencho”) extradited to the United States. U.S. law enforcement has offered a $US10 million bounty for Oseguera Cervantes, who is now the world’s most notorious cartel boss currently at liberty.
