Seventeen Jalisco legislators test Covid-19 positive

The Jalisco State Legislature (Congreso del Estado) has gone into a two-week quarantine following a spate of Covid-19 infections that includes 17 of the chamber’s 39 legislators and some of their collaborators.

pg1cThe majority of the cases were diagnosed after a marathon, in-person session lasting eight hours, held on July 21, when 35 representatives were present.

All of the infected legislators are asymptomatic, reports say.

Nearly 1,000 employees of the Congress have been asked to work from home until August 7. While the current legislative session has not been formally suspended, most of the committee work will be done electronically.

Meanwhile, two Jalisco federal legislators – Lourdes Celenia Contreras González from the 13th district (Tlaquepaque) and Juan Francisco Ramírez Salcido from the 14th district (Guadalajara) – have also tested positive. The total of representatives infected in the Camara de Diputados (lower house) stands at 15.
