Mezcala toddler perishes under wheels of bus

A five-year boy tragically lost his life Wednesday, August 26 when he was run over by a passenger bus on the highway at the outskirts of Mezcala de la Asunción.

The youngster was the constant companion and helper of his father, who ekes out a modest living by patching potholes along the roadway in exchange for tips collected from passing motorists.

The bus driver, known to be a Mezcala resident, abandoned his vehicle and the people on board to flee the accident scene, a tactic commonly employed in such incidents to avoid being jailed while legal matters are sorted out.

Passengers who frequent the Mezcala-Chapala bus route complain that some drivers tend to travel at excessive speed considering the poor road conditions, and often use their cell phones while behind the wheel.

Many local inhabitants pooled resources to help the grieving single parent cover his child’s funeral expenses.
