Quickie divorces a step closer

Lawmakers in the Constitutional Oversight Commission of the Jalisco Congress have given the green light for reforms to the Civil Code legalizing “express divorces” in the state.

The new law will remove the one-year wait to get divorced, as long as couples do not have children, are not joint owners of property, and the woman is not pregnant. Divorcees would also be able to remarry immediately. The law will also eliminate the current mandatory requirement for couples to have a “discussion” about their decision with the Family Development Agency (DIF).  PAN legislator Claudia Murguía Torres called the proposed new law a necessary shortcut that can avoid “an exhausting civil court process.”
