This year, the Island of Janitzio, just a short boat ride from Patzcuaro, Michoacan, will not be receiving visitors October 31 through November 2, for its traditional Day of the Dead festivities, due to Covid-19, says Patzcuaro Mayor Victor Báez.
Scores have died from the virus throughout Lake Patzcuaro communities, many of which will follow the example of Janitzio in curtailing their celebrations this year, although decorations of homes and altars is still expected. Nonetheless, tours of the area continue, although with strict precautions in place and without some of the usual traditional personal touches, such as being invited into the homes of locals.
Charter Club Tours in Ajijic still has a few spaces for a five-day tour of the area. The tour includes a cemetery visit in Patzcuaro, a city tour of Morelia, and side trips to Uruapan, the copper town of Santa Clara and the pueblo of Capula – where catrinas are made. A visit to two cemeteries in the architectural jewel of Tzintzuntzan is scheduled on November 2. The tour runs October 30 to November 3. The operators say social distancing and all Covid-19 precautions will be taken in the large Mercedes Benz van and during the tour. Reservations: 376-766-1777.
