Four out of five Covid victims have underlying health conditions

Although research shows that age and comorbidities are not a prerequisite for symptomatic and severe Covid-19 infection, 83 percent of people who have died from the disease in the state of Jalisco were diagnosed with an underlying health condition, according to the Jalisco Health Secretariat (SSJ).

Up until October 18, 3,678 people have died from Covid-19 in Jalisco, out of which 614 had no comorbidities – 16.69 percent of the total.

However,  Jalisco Health Secretary Fernando Petersen warned that healthy people must not assume they will be immune from serious illness. “You can’t say it won’t happen to me. Everyone is exposed and we can’t lower our guard.”

Petersen said 12 people who died from the virus in September were under age 40 and presented no underlying health conditions.

A recent study conducted by researchers from the Orthopedic Research Center, Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Mashhad, Iran, and the Department of Surgery, McGill University, McGill, Canada, revealed that the most prevalent comorbidity in confirmed Covid-19 patients was hypertension, which was found in one-fifth of the patients (21 percent). The others most prevalent were diabetes mellitus (DM) in 11 percent, cerebrovascular disease in 2.4 percent, cardiovascular disease in 5.8 percent, chronic kidney disease in 3.6 percent, chronic liver disease in 2.9 percent, chronic pulmonary disease in 2 percent, malignancy in 2.7 percent, and smoking in 8.7 percent of the patients.
