Governor hits ‘emergency button’

The activation of Jalisco’s emergency button announced Wednesday, October 28 by Governor Enrique Alfaro, while intended to curb the tide of the Covid-19 pandemic, does not mean a total lockdown of the state.

pg1aRather, it is the strategy designed by state health authorities in coordination with local governments to mitigate or reduce the rate of contagion. It consists of a two-week suspension of activities that pose the greatest risk of infection for the populace, taking effect from Friday, October 30, through Friday, November 13.

Alfaro said the proposed measures are not meant to halt the economy but rather “influence people’s behavior.”

The governor stressed that economic activity is not the prime source of Covid-19 contagion, which he said is “really ... the out-of-control crowds and recreational activities.”
