Jalisco legislator announces Covid reinfection

Jalisco state legislator Mariana Fernández has revealed that she has been infected with Covid-19 for the second time.

Posting to her Twitter account, Fernández said she also tested positive for the disease in late July.

In total, 16 Jalisco legislators have tested positive since the start of the pandemic.

According to University of Guadalajara infectologist Miguel Ángel Arias Orozco, becoming infected with Covid-19 does not automatically provide a person with immunity.

Although reinfection appears to be rare – with only a very small number of cases reported worldwide, according to the World Health Organization – experts are still unsure about the degree of immunity.  But many signs are positive. A report published this week following studies carried out on 30,000 people who tested positive for Covid-19 at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, in New York showed that more than 90 percent had moderate to high levels of antibodies and an immune response that was maintained for many months, CNN reported.
