Exotic, miniature horse breed takes root in Jalisco

An avid equestrian all her life, Tracey Adams has always had a few horses around. She bred her first horse in the 1980s, and learned how to train the offspring as they grew up.

pg15Adams says she has always had a taste for the exotic, so, several years ago, began a search for her dream horse.

After some research, Adams decided to breed one of her mares to a small Welsh stallion, but the mare didn’t become pregnant. It must have been fate that the breeding failed, because just at that moment, she discovered the Caspian horse. This breed would be too small for her to ride, but as Adams says, “I wanted to breed my mares to a small stallion, and have a medium sized pony. This was the perfect solution.”

Adams says she was in love before she ever met a Caspian horse in person.

She quickly discovered that there were no Caspian horses in Canada, so she immediately decided to rectify that. She visited a large breeder in Texas, and met these exotic animals for the first time. It was an interesting experience, she says, adding, “I can only imagine that it compares with touching a unicorn.”
