Municipalities to have more say in Covid mitigation strategy

For the remainder of 2020, municipalities in Jalisco will be granted free rein to implement their own measures to control the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, Governor Enrique Alfaro announced Monday.

pg4aRuling out further statewide restrictions, such as the recent two-week “Emergency Button” lockdown, Alfaro said the new strategy will consist of “specific actions in specific places,” adding that “we are in a position to fine-tune the strategy municipality by municipality.”

Decisions taken by the governor’s health cabinet (Mesa de Salud) will be based on the weekly hospital occupancy percentage and the percentage of seriously ill patients, Alfaro said.

Mitigation regulations that will stay in effect through December 31 include the mandatory use of face masks in all public spaces, and all businesses ensuring social distancing of one person per four square meters in indoor settings and per two square meters outdoors.

While schools will stay closed for the rest of the year, Alfaro said finding a way for in-person classes to resume in 2021 was “a priority.”

“We cannot go on any longer with no classes for children. We will be doing enormous damage to their emotional health and their learning.”
