Alcoholism on the increase

The coronavirus pandemic has caused a surge in alcoholism in Jalisco, the State Council Against Addictions (CECAJ) is reporting.

During 2019, 336 calls were made to the CECAJ hotline, the agency says, while 515 have already been received this year through mid November. “The isolation and uncertainty as a consequence of Covid-19 have increased the development of mental illnesses such as depression, as well as the consumption of alcohol,” said Pedro Briones Casillas, technical secretary of CECAJ.
