Formal job losses this year better than expected

Jalisco will close 2020 with 35,000 fewer jobs than those registered at the beginning of the year, according to Alejandro Guzmán Larralde, head of the Economic Growth and Development Department in Jalisco.

“We have already recovered two-thirds of the jobs that were lost during the first five months of the pandemic,” Guzmán Larralde said this week, adding that in July the state branch of the national employers association, Coparmex, estimated that 110,00 jobs would be lost by mid-November, when in reality the figure turned out to be just over half of that.

The stats are based on the number of employees affiliated with the IMSS health care and pension system, which in Jalisco totals 1,805,269.

Traditionally, jobs are shed during the first months of the year, but Guzmán Larralde said he expects this trend to be less severe in 2021.  He said export data from the tequila and agribusiness sectors indicate “above average orders to North America.”
