Jalisco begins administering initial doses of Covid-19 vaccine

The chief of Preventive Medicine and Epidemiology at the Hospital General de Occidente in Zapopan became the first person in Jalisco to receive a Covid-19 vaccination Wednesday morning.

pg1aDespite being in a high-risk category, David Díaz Santana Bustamante, 66, has continued to work full-time throughout the coronavirus pandemic, diligently attending to infected patients.

Following Santana, a nurse administered the vaccine to Dr. Melissa Zapiaín Sánchez, 37, who warned citizens not to lower their guard, while acknowledging that the vaccine was “a light at the end of the road.”

After a 30-minute recuperation period, Zapiaín and Bustamante both said they felt no adverse reaction to the jab.

Around 1,500 other staff at  this Zapopan public hospital were the first  in the state to receive the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine. They will get the second dose within 21 days.

Jalisco’s initial batch of 24,375 doses of the Pfizer/Bio-NTech vaccine touched down at the Guadalajara Airport on Tuesday evening. This was part of a shipment of 439,000 doses that arrived in Mexico City on Monday. Jalisco Health Secretary Fernando Petersen said front-line workers in the battle against the virus will be the first to be inoculated.
