Overhaul starts for celebrated city building

A major makeover began mid-June at the Casa de las Artesanias de Jalisco, housed in an architecturally lauded building adjoining Guadalajara’s Agua Azul Park for the past five decades.

pg7dThe state-run exposition and sales space has showcased the finest examples of Jalisco crafts since its opening in 1964. It was shuttered in 2018 by the incoming state government, pending the makeover.

The Casa de las Artesanias was designed by the late Erich Coufal, an influential Austrian architect who came to Guadalajara in the 1950s to form part of the faculty at the newly opened University of Guadalajara Architecture School. Coufal died on January 31, 2021, at the age of 94 and is considered a pivotal figure in Mexico’s modernist architectural movement of the 1960s and 70s.
