Pro-life protests gather steam, as bishops promote activism

Several hundred devout Catholics took part in a march this week in Guadalajara repudiating the recent decision of the Mexican Supreme Court that declared the criminalization of abortion unconstitutional.

Carrying banners bearing the image of the revered Virgin of Guadalupe, the protesters marched from the intersection of avenidas Guadalupe and Lázaro Cárdenas to the parish of San Juan Crisóstomo near the Grand Plaza mall, where they held a prayer session.

Representatives of pro-life groups have vowed to use legal means and lobby state legislators to ensure that Jalisco remains closed to abortion despite the ruling of the nation’s highest judicial authority.

In a press release, the Mexican Episcopal Conference (CEM), an organization of around 150 Catholic bishops in Mexico, said it “welcomes the many actions and demonstrations that have taken place throughout the country.”
