Covid skyrockets in Jalisco

The daily numbers of Covid-19 cases in Jalisco are increasing rapidly, according to state Health Department (SSJ) data.

The agency reported that average daily infections quadrupled in the last three weeks, from 143 to 567 cases per day.

From December 18 to 24, 1,100 cases were confirmed, rising to 1,744 between December 25 and 31. From January 1 to 5, the number jumped to 2,838.

Hospitalizations for Covid in Jalisco are also increasing, from 126 on December 28 to 180 on January 4.  Just over 60 percent of the patients are admitted to hospitals belonging to the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS).

The death toll from the virus, however, remains stable and has not reached the high numbers seen in previous Covid waves, when 100 people or more were succumbing on a daily basis.
